This was literally mentioned in the direct last week—the chat function is part of the Nintendo online sub. you also need to pay to be able to play online in the first place. Not defending Nintendo or anything but this stupid clickbait is stupid clickbait.

Man I can’t wait to theoretically buy this console, be playing a game, and accidentally click that button when in the middle of something. I’m sure it minimizing what I’m doing and auto redirecting to the store page won’t get annoying at allllll.

This isn’t as ragebatey as polygon tries it to be. Nintendo, like every other console publisher, is requiring for years a subscription for online features. This is just another feature in the online plan.

Yes, but… did this really need to be a totally separate button? Couldn’t this be something added to a settings menu or an overlay that you can access with another button that does not just have a single paid function?

I don’t mind there is a subscription to online features necessarily, but a dedicated button for something you won’t want to pay for and use is just silly. Like all those Netflix buttons on TV remotes.

It’s just waiting to be accidentally hit at an important moment, which will essentially pop up an ad.

There’s a lot of arguments to be made against Nintendo, but worrying about the cost of a physical button on a several hundred dollar piece of hardware isn’t it.

It probably costs under $1 worth of material to make the button. Just like on the remotes.

I’m not buying one, but not because of a button.

Was there this much of a fuss around PlayStation’s “Share” button?

The share button doesn’t require a subscription. It captures footage and stores it locally for you to freely do whatever you want with.

Smart TVs have to pay homage to the sponsors. Without Amazon Prime, Netflix and Google investments we wouldn’t be able to afford smart TV.

Yeah, it’s not about a hundred or another. It’s more like it would cost double. Not sure ppl understood my point here. I don’t have a smart TV myself precisely because of these mandatory sponsors and how they collect user data.

Why is adding a button a problem for those who don’t want to pay for it? It’s not like the button is in the way or used in any game for anything else… why do we have to complain about a harmless button that isn’t even branded??

Because it adds cost to the console. If I paid for it, then it’s my button, not theirs. You can remap those dumb tv remote buttons.

Don’t pay for it then. In fact giving any of your money to Nintendo is just another way of you saying you’re OK with the bullshit they are pulling, and they are just going to lean into that knowing you’re willing to put up with it.

I feel sorry for absolutely no one buying into this shit show.
