    I understand that, but why spying? We already know about the deposits, and the inuit towns probably don’t have much to spy on.

      A few possibilities:

      • It’s spying on the actions of the Danish government, not the Greenlandic population. For example, if/where it’s stationing troops in the island, if there’s weak/exploitable points of the economic activity there, etc. OR
      • It’s trying to gauge if it can dump some American civilians there to eventually claim popular support for USA annexation. Kind of like Brazil did against Bolivia in 1899~1903. OR
      • It’s all a big ruse and USA is trying to redirect the attention of its population towards the exterior, while the interior is a mess. Like Argentina did in 1982 (Falklands War).

      or even a mix of those. I’m conjecturing, mind you, so take those with a grain of salt.
