The term is an allusion to the sumptuary laws used from the 13th to the 18th centuries that required males in households with prostitutes to wrap their heads in a green scarf (or later a hat).

In 2007 I went to a hockey game. They gave away a hat. It says “Lake Erie Monsters”.
Now, today the team has been renamed. It’s now the Cleveland Monsters.
Point is, it’s a red hat, with white text, and I haven’t been able to wear it since 2016 despite having nothing to do with trump or politics.

I’ve been a 49ers fan for more than 30 years, thanks to these assholes now a white guy in a red hat is immediately suspect. I tend to wear the white one with red accents more often just so folks don’t get the wrong idea.

In church heraldry, Bishops and Archbishops use use a green hat. Up until the last decade, the Chinese Bishops and Archbishops used other colors for this very reason.
