As for SMB limits, I don’t know enough about it, perhaps there’s a reason they limit the connections on some devices. OP doesn’t link anything gin the article, so we have no idea to what the author is referring to.

I’m very happy with my TrueNAS solution. My only complaint is that I can’t find a low cost ATX case with 10 to 12 front loading 3.5 SATA bays.
