    I did all my schooling with blackboards. I only took a few classes at the tail end of my last uni year with whiteboards.

    As far as legibility, I prefer white (or colored) on black. But that’s just a preference.

    I can say I cared much for the horrible chalk screech though. That’s a win for the whiteboard I guess.

    But I lo like the sound of chalk sliding on the slate: it gives life to a lecture the way the thump-thump-thump on a whiteboard doesn’t. But again, that’s just a preference - and probably one borne out of my being biased towards what I’m accustomed to.

    But I’ll tell you what the clincher is for me: chalk as a consumable is very environmentally friendly: you use up almost 100% of the product (save the last tiny bit you have to hold onto) and the stub is just harmless chalk. Markers on the other hand are a bunch of metal, felt and plastic to deliver a few grams of ink, and when it’s spent, 90% of the product by weight ends up in a landfill somewhere. I find this insanely stupid.
