I did all my schooling with blackboards. I only took a few classes at the tail end of my last uni year with whiteboards.

As far as legibility, I prefer white (or colored) on black. But that’s just a preference.

I can’t say I cared much for the horrible chalk screech though. That’s a win for the whiteboard I guess.

But I do like the sound of chalk sliding on the slate: it gives life to a lecture the way the thump-thump-thump on a whiteboard doesn’t. But again, that’s just a preference - and probably one born out of my being biased towards what I’m accustomed to.

But I’ll tell you what the clincher is for me: chalk as a consumable is much environmentally friendlier: you use up almost 100% of the product (save the last tiny bit you have to hold on to) and the stub is just harmless chalk. A marker on the other hand is a bunch of metal, felt and plastic to deliver a few grams of ink, and when it’s spent, 90% of the product by weight ends up in a landfill somewhere. I find this insanely stupid.

I remember being in some lecture halls where, if someone didnt have the greatest vision, the low contrast of chalk could have been a problem near the back. Otherwise, it was fine I guess.

Yea, fuck chalkboards, and like you very few of my classes used whiteboards.

My physics classes had multiple chalkboards that lifted, so old work would be above the teacher making it easier to reference.
