“How absolutely pathetic,” declared the Justice Democrats, an advocacy group that focuses on assisting progressive challengers willing to take on more establishment lawmakers in office. “Your voters expect you to hold the line for their basic healthcare and food benefits. This is just surrender. Every Senate Democrat that joined Republicans to pass this sold the American people out and we should make sure they have no future in public office.”
“Let’s be clear — this proposal isn’t a compromise, it’s a capitulation,” said Rep. Jonathan L. Jackson (D-Ill.). “Millions [will] lose their health coverage, and millions more [will] face skyrocketing premiums. The Senate should reject this misguided plan. In the House, my vote will be HELL NO.”
The Democratic Party is dead and liberal centrism is an obstacle to progress, the DNC is not a bulwark against fascism it is a tacit and cowardly endorsement of it.
Democrats just condemned ~50,000 US citizens to death every year, let that sink in…
According to the report, premiums for Americans who buy their own health insurance will double on average next year, while 15 million people are expected to lose coverage as a result of the Republican budget. The report details how the cuts would substantially increase the number of uninsured Americans in every state in the country and double the uninsured rate in some states, including Massachusetts and Louisiana. A study from Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania estimates that the cuts could cause more than 50,000 unnecessary deaths every year.
The report includes dozens of firsthand accounts from Americans facing life-threatening consequences:
Once again demonstrating a remarkable facility for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. It sounds like several of those who caved are resigning at the next election, so it really looks like they just decided to screw everyone over on the way out.
This was organized, the rest of the party is in agreement; these ones were just the ones to fall on the sword because they’re the ones who can’t be punished
PRIMARY EVERY DEMOCRAT NOT NAMED BERNIE OR AOC!!!
I despise the corporate Dems almost as much as MAGA. They are spineless cowards who would be more than happy to fall in line if it was their side that had a version of Trump.
In this current political climate, we have MAGA and Republican popularity tanking and then for some reason, these bumfuck Dems are diving on that grenade for them.
MAYBE if YOU weren’t so Selfish you would Realize that RICH People were starting to be Effected so they HAD to Pass this and Reopen the Government!
This is exactly why they caved.
Democrats are primarily backed by big money donors. Their constituents are billionaires too, just a different set of billionaires than Republicans’ constituents.
There isn’t a party that represents the people, just two different factions of billionaires who are fighting over their share of control over the government.
I weep every night for those poor billionaires. Those corpos and their immense struggle. But as a lowly poor I could never understand the depth and wrought of their suffering.
Well, it wasn’t just billionaires. It was anyone trying to fly for the holidays.
I, for one, was willing to endure for healthcare. It was a fight that was worth it. It’s not Medicare for All, but it was something.
Effected
Props to using the actual verbiage of those who voted for this while wondering where their SNAP benefits went
They work for the same donors.
MAGA: We’ve got historical disapproval numbers, people are fleeing our party, we just faced a Blue tsunami the likes of which haven’t been seen in a generation, and we’re in the midst of a crisis with no end in sight for which the majority of Americans blame us for.
Senate Dems: Hold my beer.
It’s a good thing they’re all retiring because they’re a bunch of insanely naive pathetic cowards… Oh boy oh boy you “secured” a vote where Republicans will just repeat their “no, fuck your healthcare” but in the form of a vote.
Bravo.
They’re not all retiring, the ones who aren’t just aren’t up for re-election next year, giving plenty of time for people to forget about it.
They’re all retiring at the end of their terms if they like it or not.
Just make sure we have a good candidate in the primary. And we need to actually support people who are better before their primaries.
They’re all retiring at the end of their terms if they like it or not.
I wish. Voters tend to blindly vote for the same people over and over.
Yeah. We need to fight that in a smart way.
You can’t just say all Dems are bad. You can’t just say all incumbents are bad. Term limits aren’t the answer, and probably wouldn’t help with most of these.
We need to get good candidates in primaries and support those candidates. Now is the time to be doing this. We need someone to step up for that seat, ideally this month, and we need to get behind them.
Ideally it’d be someone with enough history to show they’re not a Sinema.
The system is set up to make it incredibly difficult for a Bernie, AOC, or Mamdani to get into office. It’s always a small miracle when one manages to.
Well, that part of the system is fixed. There was a cost to that fix, so please make it worth it.
Almost like Schumer planned it that way
Catherine Cortez Masto — Nevada
Dick Durbin — Illinois
John Fetterman — Pennsylvania
Maggie Hassan — New Hampshire
Tim Kaine — Virginia
Angus King — Maine
Jacky Rosen — Nevada
Jeanne Shaheen — New Hampshire
Technically seven Democrats and one Independent, since Angus King is among those who caved
Unfortunately the number of senators and when they’re up for reelection show that these are just the sin eaters.
Any Senate Dem that doesn’t call for Schumers removal is complicit and needs to be primaried
Double whammy for NH. “Live free or die?” LOL.
They chose die. As in, “our constituents will just have to die”
Reminder that Jeanne Shaheen’s own daughter is running for house and herself has stated that she would have voted against it. Shaheen has fucked Democrats in New Hampshire up for a generation. Hassan isn’t running for re-election in ‘28, which explains her vote.
And NH has a Q infestation of scammer grifter libertarians (I mean the ones in NH are especially scammy and grifty)
NH needs some good role models
YEP! NH wanted to be a confederate state so badly.
Same for that pile of shit that calls itself Dick Durbin. It’s retiring, so it does not care who it fucks over.
Feckless fucks
If you still have an ounce of belief in the idea that the entirety of the US governmental entity cares anything about the people, you’re a dumbass.
I should write a book “Dammed if you do, dammed if you don’t. The politics of online armchair generals.”
do it
Honest question here, if Republicans were not going to budge. How long should Democrats hold out?
Keeping the government shut down would not keep the health care premiums from going up. It would just cause other problems.
If anything, the record shutdown did a good job of making everybody aware of the issue and if it is not fixed, they will know it is Republicans who do it.
Honest question here, if Republicans were not going to budge. How long should Democrats hold out?
The Republicans were going to budge and the ball was in the Republican’s side of the court, the answer was however long it took.
This isn’t hard to grasp what happened here, it is just so cynical and pathetic we are all searching for less heartbreaking reasons so we can still believe in leaders that are actively sabotaging our future and present.
Premiums would still go up, though.
Do you not understand how politics works? This was an existential moment to fight and Democrats blew it. This is going to go into history books to describe how the US collapsed so quickly because of zero institutional breaks slowing the process down.
It was a historically long government shutdown and you say they collapsed so quickly.
I think there’s political strategy at play here and not just cowardice.
I think Republican blame for the shutdown has probably bottomed out. And Democrat support has probably peaked. Any longer and Democrats would probably start to lose favor as more people’s lives are affected by the shutdown.
Reopen the government and force the ACA vote. Everybody will be watching this vote in a way they never would have before the shutdown. If it passes, Democrats are the heroes. If it fails, Republicans are the villains. It’s a win win for Democrats.
And as I said, keeping the government shut down will do nothing for healthcare premiums.
Set a reminder to read this comment again in two months and see if that’s how this plays out. I’m not sure how many times Democrats need to help Republicans fuck you over before you understand that neither party’s leadership has any intention of doing something else.
So your suggestion is to keep the government shutdown forever? Premiums still go up only everybody else is now affected by the shutdown.
People would turn on the Democrats at some point. If I had to guess, I’d say they already started to and they have internal polling that shows it.
I wish I knew anyone who gave me as much benefit of the doubt as you give Democrats. I don’t get why it’s apparently so difficult for you to imagine that they don’t have your best interests in mind.
They held on for over a month and then gave up, giving the Republicans everything they wanted. Premiums always go up, but you’re either a moron or a bad actor if you think premiums going up 10% is worse than doubling. Republicans won’t vote for the subsidies, so the Democrats have jusy thrown away all their leverage for a pinky promise
Do you even understand the issue you’re talking about? Yes, premiums are still going to double if the government stays shut down!
Literally the only way they are not going to double is if Republicans allow a vote and approve the additional funding.
And by shutting down the government, Democrats have made it clear who is responsible for this. And by reopening the government they have forced a vote that should be very high profile.
Keeping the government shut down was not going to stop the premiums from doubling as you say.
Republicans aren’t going to vote to continue the subsidies next month. And they won’t when the CR expires in the new year. What they needed to do was force the Republicans to extend the subsidies now.
The Democrats are feckless cowards who serve the Republicans everything they want on a silver platter
The Republicans were spooked. They got big losses in recent elections, public opinion considered them responsible for the shutdown, and Trump was flailing over killing SNAP. And Thanksgiving was going to make things even worse for them.
The Republicans were going to give in. And then the Democrats decided that they were doing too well.
I certainly don’t believe republicans were going to give in. Maybe they end the filibuster to “save america” or some bullshit.
Either way, if you believe republicans were going to cave, then it makes sense to want to keep the shutdown going.
how long should they hold out? until republicans cave or the the inevitable regime change. what’s the point of holding out for any period of time if you’re going to cave eventually? this was literally the only leverage they had. now they have signalled that they don’t stand for anything and republicans never need to negotiate on anything ever again.
They drew attention to the issue. Now everybody will be watching this vote.
In your scenario, premiums will still go up! Only everybody else would be negative impacted by the shutdown as well.
what is this cope dude. they held for 40 days and got zilch. drew attention to what, the fact that they can literally do nothing, like absolutely nothing of value at all, in any circumstance? mission accomplished if that was the goal.
also raise whose awareness? who’s gonna do anything? it’s their job to do things in congress; whose awareness is gonna make a change? what are the newly aware people supposed to do now? storm the capitol?
People on here act like shutting the government down is some magic path to get anything you want.
If you look at all the previous government shutdowns the only thing that is ever really gained is one party is blamed and the other party is not. It is a political spectacle, and that’s all anybody should expect from it.
Did they get zilch? The only way to tell is by looking at polling numbers. If the democrats are seen as more popular and republican seen as less popular, then that’s literally the best case scenario from a government shutdown.
yes, so why quit? this is snatching an L from a win-win situation: by holding out they were either gonna force republicans to cave and get what they want, which would allow them to brag about bringing the party in power to their knees for the good of the people, making the republicans look weak af, or they would not cave but prolong this shutdown which makes republicans less popular every minute and allow dems to run on it every election going forward.
this was the worst possible outcome.
My guess is they have internal polling that showed people were going to start turning against them.
Worst possible outcome is people blamed democrats and not republicans. As government shutdowns go, this is probably literally the best possible outcome for democrats.
oh i forgot they’re just passive observers to what people think about who to blame. it’s not like any of them have access to the media or a microphone or anything. if internal poll showed that; that only proves this is a massive messaging disaster from the democrats.
Now everybody will be watching this vote.
Lol just a little too optimistic and not really grounded in the current political climate.
I am more optimistic than I should be.
Honestly, I just think people on here have unrealistic expectations though. Keeping the government shutdown forever will not accomplish anything more than it already has.
It raised the profile of the issue. Republicans have been blamed. Trump’s approval rating kept going down. Only thing left was for Democrats to start losing support, which I believe the leadership saw coming.
Republicans have already shown they don’t care about the pain and suffering caused by the shutdown. Trump was pushing them to end the filibuster. Imagine if they were to go that route.
So you support the Democrats Susan G Komen approach to government? Raise miney to pay for staffers and beurocrats and then give pennies to you actual mission?
Huh?
Susan B Komen would raise a ton of money for breast cancer. But wouldn’t actually spend any money towards helping with the cause. They spent money just to market themselves and “raise awareness” and only contributed around 15% of total funds towards the actual cause.
The poster was criticizing the approach of “raising awareness” for this.
I would also agree that raising awareness doesn’t really do anything when the current regime runs slapdash to laws and norms. You need to clamp down and do everything to resist. Not just sit and pray voters get a chance to make it better when the current regime has been televising they’re gonna do everything they can to limit and prevent voting.
That makes sense. The typos didn’t help me understand…
Raising awareness is literally politics, through. Republicans aren’t going to follow laws, but they do have to worry about midterms. They can’t fully cheat to win.
