Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville was referring to Mamdani’s swearing-in on a Quran. The Council on American-Islamic Relations has documented a history of anti-Muslim statements from him.
Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville from Alabama posted on social media: “The enemy is inside the gates” upon learning that Zohran Mamdani became the first mayor of New York City to be sworn in using a Quran.
The Quran is the primary religious text of Islam, akin to the Christian Bible. Mamdani is the first Muslim mayor of New York, the nation’s largest city.
Tuberville, a conservative football coach-turned-politician, has a history of making anti-Muslim statements, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR.

I had a sociology teacher that is Muslim rant about (circa 2010) prejudices relating to how violent the text in the Quran is. Argued that the book should be re-written. However this was also a person who argued that schools should swap teachers and force them to grade each other’s test.
Then I took a class on religions in North America and learned that teacher had a history of getting Muslim students who they claimed learned more about their own faith practices in that class than before they had been enrolled.
Have you ever read the Bible?
Islamophobia is rampant in the west and no one wants to combat it.
All the Abrahamic religions are violent and oppressive and no one wants to combat it either.
Please don’t hold water for the narrative that Israel is representative of Judaism as a whole
It is certainly empowering them. Same way Islam is empowering Iran and Christianity is empowering the far right in America.
There are peaceful people despite those religions, but not because of them. Our peaceful and cooperative nature comes from our biology and societies.
That’s simply false. I’m a practicing Muslim and I’m peaceful because of my religion and not despite it. My religion pushes me to be more patient with people and respect people who probably don’t deserve it.
Claiming that Muslims are peaceful despite their religion is a profoundly ignorant take. Talk to any kid in Sunday school if you don’t believe me. Islam has the same root word in Arabic as “peace.”
All social animals demonstrate the capacity and preference formorality. 6 month old toddlers demonstrate it before even understanding religion and complex language.
You are peaceful because of our biological social programming and evolution selecting for it over thousands of generations, not because rules written down in a book by some person.
Only humans commit violence in the name of religion. Its not the only reason, but its a very common one. Its a very effective way to reprogram our inherit morality and to get good people to think that bad things are good.
That’s not at all accurate. Toddlers are not an example of moral creatures; sharing and empathy are not developed at that age either.
If religion went away, violence would still exist. Atheist regimes still commit genocides. Humans just suck. This still doesn’t address my original point, you’re claiming that Christianity is somehow inherently more peaceful and that’s historically false, and claiming that Muslims are peaceful but their religion is pushing them to the opposite, and that’s ridiculously ignorant. If Islam magically went away, you’d still see violence in the Middle East due to colonialism and imperialism.

I would encourage you to read up on the research. Pre verbal babies absolutely demonstrate moral behaviour. As do many animals.
I also did not say Christianity was peaceful. It certainly was just as violent as Islam during the middle ages when they were at the peak of their expansionist periods.
The most peaceful human societies are the ones where religion has the least impact. You are correct that it is not the only factor. Systemic Violence will find its way anywhere where inequality is being exploited.
Whether it is religion based like with Christian nationalism in the West, Islamic forced conversions of children in West Africa, or Jewish settler colonialism in Palestine.
Or, if religion is not playing a significant role, like with resource exploitation, imperialism or illicit substance trade.
The difference is that religion most often used to convince moral people that the bad things they are asked to participate in, are in fact good things, where with the latter, they usually know they are doing bad things, but feel they have no other choice.
