I live in a pretty dangerous area of town. One day i was at a convenience store and the owner chased some guy out with a baseball bat. It wasn’t until I got home that I thought ‘damn, that was pretty weird’

Don’t give into it, stay angry, keep barking at the hand that shocks you. And when it gets close enough, bite the fucker.

This is a perfectly reasonable reaction to have. The first time he saw the monster, it was alarming because it might be dangerous. It clearly is not, since 10 days have passed and he’s fine, so it’s understood to be mundane now.

It’s an amazing evolutionary trait that served us well back when danger was around every corner. We likely wouldn’t have gotten this far without it. But people in power will always exploit any weakness they can in order to keep us subservient. You can see a similar scenario play out with regards to our tendency to make groups of “us” and “them;” it was a beneficial trait back when we were small tribes competing for limited resources, but now it’s a tool for bad actors to exploit.

It’s important that we recognize and acknowledge the pitfalls of the mental traits we’ve evolved to have, so that we can better recognize when they’re being exploited. Overcoming our own base instincts isn’t about ignoring them or pretending we don’t have them, because we will always have them - it’s about seeing them, knowing when they’re being used against us, and making the conscious choice to take another path.

That doesn’t account for pandemics, natural disasters, and the countless other crises that pop up constantly. This is much more than just one group or individual’s political strategy.

Their political strategy on health makes pandemics worse than they need be.

Their political strategy on climate increases the quantity and severity of natural disasters.

Their political strategy on foreign affairs causes global destabilisation which creates other crises.

We’ve always had pandemics, natural disasters, and random crises but they’re actively made worse by the likes of MAGA. Flooding the zone is very much the reason for the insanity of modern news headlines. That and HyperNormalisation.
