Hi, its my 3rd pc build so i’d like to see if there is some kink that I’m unaware of or something else that doesn’t really fit.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fQrGFZ

I mainly used it for gaming in 1440 or maybe at 4k and it will be on linux.

thank you for your time

If your main use case is gaming then 128 GB of RAM is way overkill, 32 GB is fine.

ASRock has had some issues with 9800X3D chips so I would choose a different motherboard manufacturer.

I would personally go with a less expensive storage solution, such as this Crucial 4TB SSD or 2 of these 2 TB TeamGroup SSDs. You could go even cheaper with these drives from Silicon Power which are well reviewed on PCPartPicker. For a little more but still cheaper than your spec’d SSD, these SK Hynix drives are also pretty popular.

Agree with all of this. If you happen to get the SK Hynix drive, be sure to update the firmware if it’s not already or you may run into the write speed issue.

128 is definitely overkill. But I feel like if you’re getting such a high end CPU, and you’re going to keep it for a while 64 could be worth it. OP says they’re mostly just gaming, but they’re probably going to have a web browser and a bunch of other things running in the background that will consume memory.

The P41 is a great SSD, but they’re only made up to 2tb, and having to split stuff up across two drives is kinda lame and sometimes a hassle. The Crucial P3 is a great budget drive, but it’s very much a budget drive. I have one in my nas and it’s fine, but I’m not writing much data to it. Those drives only have an 800tbw rating vs 2400 on the 990. It also has a very unfortunate cache situation, and as the drive fills up it only gets worse. If you’re looking to save money then sure go for that. But I don’t think $100 is going to break the bank at OPs price point.

thank you for your input. 128 is indeed overkill, the only reason i go for it is just because…

do you have other motherboard manufacturer recommendations? im trying to build small pc thing

Strong disagree with gigabyte. They screwed me and other over with horrible quality products in the past and didn’t own up to the defects (like literal fire blasts). Be wary.

To be fair that’s pretty much all the manufacturers. I’ve heard of issues with Gigabyte PSUs but I don’t remember issues with their motherboards specifically. MSI has done shady marketing in the past, Asus is still fucked with their RMA processes. You don’t have to dig very deep to find reasons to avoid all of them.

    • Echoing the other post, ASRock has had issues with X3D chips, so another manufacturer might be a good bet for now.

    • My understanding is that unless you win the Silicon Lottery, the AM5 memory driver has issues with speeds faster than 6000 Mhz. Your “sweet spot” for AM5 chips is allegedly 6000Mhz CL30, which can be had for about the same price as the kit you already have.

    • Also… it’s not wrong, exactly, but since you’re using it for gaming and not media creation, 128GB is a lot of memory. YMMV; I don’t have experience at 4K. It may also depend on how long you expect to keep this machine going: If it’s less than several years, you may want to buy less now and upgrade sooner.

    • That case doesn’t seem to come with any fans. Especially since you’ve got a smaller CPU cooler, airflow will be key. Recommend at least 3, maybe 4 or more.

thank you for your input. the asrock and x3d sound serious.

I’m trying to build a small pc and that case only allow 1 fan for cpu and maybe an extra a few more from the gpu, not sure if its enough
