It is the same reason that pro gun republicans still won overwhelmingly after the massacre in Uvalde and farmers keep voting for republicans no matter how much they get screwed over. Because as long as they can believe someone else is suffering more, they are happy.
I think you vastly overestimate how informed these people are on anything related to politics. Most of them don’t think any further than, “vote red because that’s what I was raised to do.”
They were told that it would just be the criminals and gang members, and they were stupid enough to believe it.
