Wikipedia volunteers rushed an active shooter… More courageous than Uvalde police and many other armed LEOs

To be fair to american police, it takes a special kind of courage to stay in a job where you have to deal with a bunch of dangerous murderers drinking coffee in your office every day.

The armed man’s motivations were murky. But he was wearing a sign around his neck that said “anti-contact non-offending pedophile” and he told the audience he was going to die by suicide to protest what he called Wikipedia’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on pedophiles.

The site has a rule that editors “who identify themselves as pedophiles will be blocked and banned indefinitely.”

That is the opposite of murky.

He knows he’s a pedophile, but refuses to make contact with children and is, hopefully, getting help. But the mere act of admitting he has a problem got him banned from Wikipedia and that made him frustrated enough to attempt gun violence against the foundation.

I think it’s also a bit murky to call this “attempted gun violence against the foundation.” Killing himself in front of them would be traumatic for them, of course, but the violence would have been directed against himself.

I can see how this is a very complicated thing overall. Pedophilia is a mental condition, I expect most pedophiles don’t choose to be attracted to children. Why would someone choose something like that? Someone who is a pedophile could recognize that their condition is a disorder and seek treatment for it, and I would consider such a person to be laudable for their efforts. But of course lots of people don’t see it that way and we get zero-tolerance policies like this one Wikipedia has, and I think it likely leads to counterproductive outcomes. Makes it preferable to keep your condition secret rather than seeking out treatment.

I’m going to say that going to them and being as unstable as he is meant everyone in that room was in danger, even if he had no original intention to hurt anyone else.
