Werthers original are German candies, and I’ve definitely heard jokes about old people liking them (or campino Früchte, or something similar) in Germany. Root beer is a North American thing though

Butterscotch is far superior to ordinary caramel.

Can confirm French of a certain age would’ve grown up seeing the commercials on TV and eating them occasionally.
