Lower Decks only did it because the bridge crew hog the holodeck
I know AI isn’t popular these days, especially here on Lemmy… buuut…
How far off are we, actually, from being able to have an unauthorized AI Martok DM in real life?
You can do that now. That’s really the only thing I’ve done with a chatbot I thought worked out pretty realistically; using one that lets you get multiple bots in the same chat and playing D&D with them.
The inconsistencies of the output worked in its favor in-so-far as you’ll spend half the session arguing over the interpretation of the rules and forgetting what happened previously. Just like at a real table.
The chatbot in question was already designed to be for fictional characters. Getting Martok should be easy.
But how close are we to getting the response as a deepfaked video in real-time, instead of text?
It would be pretty trivial to create a martok voice clone and pipe llm text output to a TTS model with martok’s voice.
The video portion idk about but it’s probably doable.
Pretty sure we’re there with that, too, at this point. Sora was already really fuckin’ hard to tell it was AI.
It ain’t worth it if it’s not authentic. J.G. Hertzler’s still above ground, and if Tawny Newsome has some pull accompanied by the fanbase…

It ain’t worth it if it’s not authentic.
To be fair, it was canonically an unauthorized deepfake! Not that I have anything against Hertzler, but just sayin’ that inauthentic is authentic in this particular case.
Plus, I’m talking about using an LLM with infinite possible responses, not something akin to the TNG interactive VCR board game from the '90s. At best, it’s still just a text-to-speech trained on his voice with his permission instead of without it, not actually him voice-acting each line.
I get you. Given enough time, this type of notion will warrant reconsideration and possibly result in worthwhile media. We’re just not there presently.

There is no way Worf would not be some kind of fighter/barbarian/monk kind of class.
He is also not a merry man.
A true warrior challenges himself. Gnome thief. 100%.
“There is nothing honorable about thievery. I dock myself 1000 XP.”
Yeah, you’re probably right. There was a really morally inflexible guy in our group and he’d always play a paladin.
Shit, I wish I’d DM’d, I’d build a whole campaign of trolley tests for that guy.
Trolly problems? <chuckles in evil DM> those are just to see if he’s paying attention.

(and no, I have never played DnD, so I probably got some ordering wrong)
Something about Tasha critically failing a wisdom check maybe?
To be fair, Armus didn’t look sentient until it was too late.
Riker looking at the dm notes, typical
Lets be real, if any of you had a holodeck, you would never play tabletop again. Why the fuck would they?
If holodecks were real I’d get ejected from starfleet the second anyone checked the logs.
The absolute depravity a real life holodeck would enable cannot be put into words.
But it would be part of your healing journey, guided by a health professional. So Star Trek would be good with it.
I’d use the holodeck to set up my table, but ttrpgs are different experiences. Ttrpgs have an element of human creativity, improvisation and genuine “wtf just happened” that simply couldn’t be replicated by a computer.
Oh ye of little faith.
I mean LARP exists and we still play TTRPGs.
LARPing isn’t remotely close imo.
I guess it depends on the Con and its “production value”.
Trek has this really weird aversion to anything that seems familiar and normal.
Strange new worlds is much better in this regard.
