A serving size of mikado is 13 sticks

13 sticks? Really? The container has like 40 of em. And that is still not many. Who in their right mind would only eat 13 of em?

I remember when I found out what servings were as a kid. Before that I thought just like the whole bag or whatever was one serving

My favorite part is when you see shit like “serving size: Half of a candy bar”. Because seriously, who the fuck eats half of a candy bar, then sets it down to come back for more later? Especially when it’s something like a Snickers, which has caramel that would drip all over if you tried to save it.

The FDA allows food manufacturers to determine what a “reasonable” amount for a serving is… But has zero actual guidelines on what makes a serving size reasonable. And since they don’t enforce any actual serving sizes, manufacturers can just use whatever the fuck they want for serving sizes.

In the EU labels have to have a standard measure, either 100 ml (for things normally handled by volume), or 100 g (for things normally handled by weight).

They can also have a serving size, which is not standardized as far as I know (some cereal has serving size of 30 g, some 40 g, and so on).

Best example of this is zero calorie vegatiable oil cooking spray. The serving size is a hilarious 1 second squirt, which contains so few calories that they’re allowed to mark the can as zero calorie.

This is also why zero-calorie sweetener packets are the size they are. They’re allowed to round to the nearest 10, which includes rounding down to 0. So sweetener packets are realistically ~4.75-4.9 calories. That way they’re allowed to call it a “zero calorie” sweetener.

Really though, they may print servings all they want, but where are our one serving pack? They don’t really expect us to eat just one serving, do they?

When I first started eating healthy I bought healthy snacks too. Then watching the serving size with a food scale.

I then realized I can still eat the crap junk food I did before just keep to the serving size.

So instead bringing a pack of Oreos to my computer and eating 8~13 while gaming I get 3 with half a glass of milk and leave the pack in the kitchen.

Eventually I stopped buying Oreos and switched to nuts / fruit.

    Lost 20 lbs

This is a obviously correct comment, but if something is in the house, I’m gonna be snacking on it. The only solution for me was to make the decision to eat healthy at the grocery store, not at home.

There’s more to eating healthy than just calories and quantities. It’s not healthy to eat most of those junk foods, especially sugar

They only put these unseasonably small serving sizes so they can claim there’s still a normal amount of sugars, fats and whatnot per serving

I cant find any examples but do you remember adverts in the 90s of an entire fucking buffet and the person running past it all grabbing the SuperSugarSurpriseTM on the way out?

Im convinced all that table was the rest of the Balanced Breakfast the thing was a part of

Hunger is a normal part of life … I keep trying to remind myself of that

Just because you are hungry, it doesn’t mean that you are starving or dying … sometimes it’s just your dumb greedy biological system wanting to eat everything in sight because it still thinks that you live in the African savanna and there’s no food around.

I grew up poor and as a kid, hunger was just a normal part of life. We weren’t starving, mom and dad gave us enough nutrition every day to be comfortable but not to live in complete luxury where we could eat any time we wanted. I remember wanting snacks during the day and there were none … so you just drank some hot tea to satisfy the craving and then went on with your day. By the time we were teens, we were lean, built and none of my friends were overweight (this was in the 80s and early 90s). It wasn’t until we all had free access to cheap snacks and sugar water that we all started having problems with our weight. I’m middle aged now and I constantly have to battle my urge to want to eat any and everything in sight.

The best part of this comment is that I’m snacking on a tube of pringles as I’m writing this.

A few years ago, I learned that the stomach rumble when you’re hungry, is part of a process that’s actually kind of important health-wise: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Migrating_motor_complex

So, it’s good when your stomach and small intestine empty out on a regular basis. It’s good when you’re hungry on a regular basis.
Just yet another luxury problem of modern times, that we have food available at all times and need to stop ourselves from snacking.

Side-note: It’s also good to go hungry, because then when you do eat, the food tastes so much better. This also means you can go for healthier food and still have it hit the spot.

Most of the cleaning waves in the MMC happen at night while we are asleep. For many people this will be sufficient to help maintain a healthy, balanced environment in the digestive tract.
