Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters in Beijing:

“The elections are a major event in Russia’s political calendar, the results of which represent will of the Russian people. China firmly supports their independent choice and stands ready to work with Russia to advance bilateral ties.”

It’s frustrating how consistently China is backing Russia. But in the sense of geopolitical pragmatism, it does make a lot of sense with regards to the CCP stance on Taiwan.

That’s right. Taiwan doesn’t come into the calculation at all. If the US had its way, China would not be a leader in any tachnology field and Chinese workers would still work for under $1/hr so US firms manufacturing in China can extract superprofits while deinstitutionalizing the US. If China is to prevent that, they gotta have defence, and economic independence that can’t be curbed by the US on a whim. So that includes unsanctionable fossil fuel supply. And that gives you the support for Russia.

At the same time I don’t think they’ve restricted exports of dual-use goods to Ukraine. They’ll make microcontrollers, motors and batteries for either.

China is backing Russia for basically the same reasons Europe is backing Ukraine*: It’s good value for weakening their enemies and getting their allies to owe them. If anything they could afford to do more; aside from sending good vibes their way their relationship with Russia is basically business as usual AFAIK, so they’re actually making money here. Not that I’m defending what they’re doing to be clear, but it makes so much sense geopolitically that it’s hard to imagine them behaving in any other way.

*Europeans might want to back Ukraine for human rights and stuff, but it’s fairly clear that their governments are doing so to keep Russia away.

    Turkish run media.

I know the Chinese are a bit silly, but I’m starting to get really annoyed at the constant anti-chinese propaganda, often thinly sourced.

I agree with the quality of the media in principle, but this is just a report from a press conference in China. The outlet is just quoting a simple statement by one of China’s government spokesmen. There is no investigation.

And this is definitely not ‘anti-Chinese propaganda’. Also, the reports critical of China that I can read here on Lemmy and elsewhere are mostly well-sourced and published by highly reliable sources, and therefore, absolutely justified.

If Fox News spent a week of wall-to-wall coverage reporting on a credible case of an undocumented immigrant raping a white woman, would you say it’s not propaganda because it’s credible?

This is a weird comparison imo. The Chinese spokesman has said that, and both countries’ governments have been hailing their ‘ironclad friendship’ frequently in the past, while China is a decisive supporter of Russia’s war against Ukraine, amongst others.

I’m explaining what propaganda is. It’s not lies. It’s emphasis. The daily deluge of Chinese criticism is propaganda, even if it is all 100% true (which I suspect it is not).

Sorry, but you have lost the plot. Your example is Fox News stirring up anti-immigrant sentiment by prominently featuring one immigrant criminial, wanting to cast all immigrants in a bad light. The article the OP posted cites a spokesman of China’s foreign ministry as saying

“China congratulates Russia on the smooth conclusion of the Russian State Duma elections,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters in Beijing.

Your example tries to put blame on a group of people by highlighting one individual, the article cites an envoy of a state making an announcement on behalf of the state. If you can’t tell the difference between the two, you need to check yourself.

I guess my metaphor had too many parts to it.

What I want to draw your attention to is the “week of wall-to-wall coverage.”

In the metaphor, it’s one story. But in this case, it’s multiple stories posted every day, all attacking China.

Why? Why are these stories being published at such a constant rate?

I’ll note that a large amount of time, the sources are USG officials; I’m guessing they want to make sure they can pass laws hamstringing China economically, and need to make China a public enemy to continue passing these laws, so the constant feed of anti-China news is effectively a domestic psy-op.

I can’t speak to “all” the china coverage, but China congratulating Russia for their elections is being reported now, because the elections were now. As for negative coverage, there are also good news coming from China, like them being able to super-scale renewable energy production, the sales figures for EVs or the general fact that China is good in lifting people out of poverty. That shouldn’t overshadow the fact however that China is a one-party autocracy without free elections and the most oppressive surveillance state, which is committing a cultural genocide against minority peoples within their borders.

To give you an extreme example: imagine multiple times every day there was a story about what a shithole Mississippi was. Maybe you wouldn’t think much about it. I mean, Mississippi is a shithole. We all know it! Look at all these articles about it!

But there are plenty of other shithole states. Would you ever stop to ask yourself why there are constantly so many stories published and posted about Mississippi?

Another weird comparison. Mississippi isn’t a shithole imo, nor is China. But the Chinese government is a dictatorship, and so is Russia. They are bad. There are a lot of well-sourced reports from reliable sources you could read to learn about it.

I live in the states and I rarely get news stories about Mississippi. It’s got it’s problems but it’s not a world power that controls the voice of billions of people. Your analogy sucks.

I’m learning that pointing out anti-Chinese American Propaganda without falling into looking like a tankie might be an impossible needle to thread.

Edit: Also that maybe an article about a Chinese diplomats statements in a Turkish outlet might not be the best venue. lol. It was on my mind.

Generally speaking, countries don’t need you to white knight for them on the Internet. It makes you look like a nationalist nut, like you’re the one spreading propaganda.
