“Convetional Wisdom” has been shoving Horse and Sparrow economics down our throats for 150 years. It’s never worked for anyone but The Epstein Class. Of course any other model will work more successfully when we are excluding The (psychologically damaged and sick) Dragons from economic policy.
Does it? Then Conventional Wisdom is stupid as fuck.
One of his biggest [economic] fuck-ups was not cutting the red tape to get more broadband services deployed to rural areas. It might not have incentivized better information sharing but it can be a great economic boost. I work from home and it would be a dream of mine own a few acres of land in a smallish town but also be able to have a tech job.
Imagine if all those yokels were still on dialup…
I mean, if he was so wise about climate change, why did we break fossil fuel production records under Biden after trump broke them?
Here’s a graph showing overall fossil fuel USAGE in the US peaked about 2008. The Biden years do show an upward trend but it looks more like COVID recovery and flattens out well under 2008
https://www.statista.com/statistics/244429/us-fossil-fuel-energy-consumption-by-sector/
But this probably explains what you see. Check out this graph of petroleum exports sky rocketing in recent years, including during Biden years as new drilling technology like fracking and horizontal drilling quickly turned us into the biggest oil producing country. Oil companies have been getting rich
https://www.statista.com/statistics/191320/total-us-petroleum-exports/
And here’s one that explains the different. Look at drilling leases by president and you’ll see far less under Biden. Trump 1 had record leases and all that new drilling came through while Biden was president, but Biden tried to cut back. Remember, oil wells don’t magically produce on day 1
USAGE
I think the problem is we’re talking about two different things…
What I don’t understand is why you capslocked “usage” if you didn’t notice they were separate things.
Like, it should be obvious but which do you think causes more pollution and global climate change:
-
Digging up a ton of coal in West Virginia, and burning it in West Virginia under US laws.
-
Digging up a ton of coal in West Virginia, loading it onto a boat, shipping it to China, distributing to their rural areas who rely on coal, them burning it with zero environmental regulations.
Not saying it’s good to burn coal here.
Just explaining why I explicitly brought up production and not usage.
Because the only thing worse than using your own fossil fuel reserve, bis destroying your environment to sell it to another country.
That fucking coal will be just as good in a thousand years, and we probably wouldn’t need to frack to get it if we ever did need it.
People don’t understand how much tech bros would charge for that kind of stored energy storage on that long of timeframe, it’s literally invaluable when you look at it on a long timeline.
Or why countries with a shit ton of coal themselves are happy to pay more to get ours.
Once we can’t sell anymore, theirs becomes a shit ton more valuable
You may be missing my point.
Yes, production is up
But usage is down and that extra production goes toward exports (not that export is any different for the climate)
And while this might be more tenuous, it follows record drilling leases by the first Trump administration. It may have ramped up on Biden’s watch, but this is a Trump thing.
Biden cut way back on leases for drilling
But usage is down
Buddy…
Burning coal where it is dug will always be less pollution than shipping it to the other side of the planet using different fossil fuels, and then burning it over there.
Global Warming isn’t just a nimby issue…
That’s why it’s called Global Warming
why did we break fossil fuel production records under Biden after trump broke them?
Trump 1 had record leases and all that new drilling came through while Biden was president, but Biden tried to cut back
the problem is we’re talking about two different things
It may have ramped up on Biden’s watch, but this is a Trump thing
Global Warming isn’t just a nimby issue
Sure, but I had responded to your question political statement and you changed the thread so we ended up in different places
No one here will disagree with the global warming part. The us is both the largest historical emitters of carbon and one of those most resisting change. Yes in this case global warming is very much us centric. In this case the world really can’t do it without us
No one here will disagree with the global warming part
So…
You understand that blowing up mountains in America to ship coal to China so they can burn it is at least as bad for the environment as blowing up mountains in America and burning the coal here?
If so, buddy I’m ready to count this as a win and cut ties.

Energy use grows. Unless 100% of that new energy is green, then some of it will be from new fossil fuels. Getting literally 100% of new energy from green is a serious task. Which yes we really need to do, but this “gotcha, biden broke production records, gotcha” is just misleading.
*Also, how much of that new production is for export. Again we really need to stop this but this is now along the lines of 100% new global demand would have to be green.
I have a feeling this is an evergreen headline for that first part.
Without the manufacturing build-out, our estimates suggest, Harris would have lost that state by three times as much as she did.
So their conclusion is that without the IRA, the Dems would have lost even worse. Liberals sure do love their moral victories.
The point is that it doesn’t make sense to give up on doing the right thing here. It does make sense to market it better and reach more people
