    Counterpoint

I was watching Labyrinth on a loop as a young boy, and I thought David Bowie was awesome, but I turned out… more or less straight. Mostly. Pretty much. I mean, of course Bowie is gorgeous, I’m not an idiot.

I am also more or less straight, but even I can regonize that Antonio Banderas was a very attractive man.

It’s a two-sided coin. As a straight guy, watching Lucy Lawless in the Xena costume made me more hetero than ever.

I’m a fairly cishet man and I think she’s responsible for my appreciation of queer lit. I’m definitely a little gayer than I otherwise would be.

You misunderstand the math equation, much like how there is nothing manlier than two men (Femboys not accounted for due to unstable variables) there is nothing straighter that someone heterosexual appreciating homosexual tendencies of the opposite sex. Mind you this is operating on simplified variables, trans and bi folks make the math far far messier and I shall leave such matters of gayness and straightness to others who aren’t me.

I mean I appreciate homosexual tendencies in men too. I think it makes for some really steamy stories. I guess that’s that Kinsey spectrum.

It’s just possible I’ve just lapsed into presumed heterosexuality because I’m in a great monogamous relationship with a woman.

So anyway, that’s why I say gay-er, but not fully gay or bi. Does that even make sense? Lol

I never watched it. I remember other kids at school talking about it, but I never watched it. Kind of wished I did now.

I remember seeing a comment somewhere wishing they would reboot Xena, but lamenting that they would probably make it “too woke” if they did

I don’t think there’s much they could do to make Xena more “woke” if they tried.

It’s like this one guy that asked “what’s a run of X-Men that has no woke messaging “. Like dude…

You could make it more woke by replacing Kevin Sorbo with an actual human being, but that only affects the crossovers.

People who talk like that have only seen pictures from the show, or they watched it a little bit when they were a child and don’t remember 99%.

Because Xena and Gabrielle did pretty much everything except the physical deeds. And it was recently confirmed in a comic, where they kiss and say they love eachother.

Hell, you could probably show them the old show with the parts set in modern times and they’d blow their gasket. Becase the reincarnations are the opposite genders for a while.

“recently confirmed in a comic” doesn’t really matter; because that’s exactly how things get retconned in.

I mean, you’re right, but not because of the comic.

Yo I should give this show another go. I remember watching it when I wasn’t even a teenager, thinking it was kind of silly. But maybe it’s good as an adult?

I’ll give it a few episodes maybe.

it’s very deliberately silly. and it’s fun as hell. i watched it as an adult a couple years ago and to me it surprisingly holds up. the characters are enjoyable in a campy way, the actors are charismatic, the ideas are interesting (certainly more so than Hercules), and the action scenes—while clearly suffering from a limited budget—are actually top notch in concept. they were taking all their notes from hong kong action movies and it shows. they even nod to it by eventually taking xena “back” to the show’s version of china.

Cool, I’ll give it a go then I think. My wife also grew up with it so it might be a good nostalgic way to connect over something “new”. 😄

It’s worth it if you can view it with the mindset that it’s intentionally silly/“camp”. For a very basic comparison: It’s in a similar style to shows like Buffy or Charmed, just more self-aware.

Although it has to be said: It was technically a spinoff from Hercules, and there are crossover episodes. But that show is not nearly as good, for a multitude of reasons. And it got to the point where Kevin Sorbo(Hercules) is still salty about how a lot of the crew went over to Xena. He has even accused Lucy Lawless on social media of “stealing” crew from his show. To which she just laughs and mocks him, like she regularly does when he says stupid things.

I can’t believe that, as a preteen, I thought she was “too manly”
Because a) no she wasn’t, she was a straight knockout and b) that’s sexist AF wtf preteen me.

I mean… Xena, Calypso, and Gabrielle confirmed I’m straight. But at least Joxer taught me the kind of guy to find as a best friend?

Oh, and always keep any women I care about away from Autolycus.
